What is more Australian than fish and chips? Across Australia every town and city boasts a takeaway or fish and chip shop.
But who can lay claim to having Australia’s best fish and chips? The search starts now and the competition is sure to be fierce.
The Assistant Minister for Agriculture and Water Resources, Anne Ruston, today announced the start of the 2017 Australian Fish and Chips awards at Parliament House.
The eve of Sustainable Seafood Day is a great time to kick of the search and remind seafood consumers that Australia’s fish and chips are the best because our fisheries are the best.
“Eating fish and chips is something that pretty much every Australian can relate to,” says Peter Horvat, the Fisheries Research and Development Corporation’s Communications, Trade and Marketing Manager, “for us it provides a common thread to connect with people to tell the story of Australia’s fisheries.”
It doesn’t matter if its battered barramundi from the north, flake from Victoria or garfish from South Australia, there is a fish for all occasions and tastes. The search for Australia’s favourite fish and chips is about encouraging everyone to have their say.
Everyone has a story about fish and chips, whether it is eating them on the beach or the Friday night family feed. Fish and chips is intrinsic to who we are and we should not forget the fishers and farmers who make that possible.

The Australian Seafood Industry in partnership with the Australian Government and Fisheries Research & Development Corporation work to best practise standards to ensure Australian seafood stocks are sustainable and renewable. In Australia we are lucky to be able to buy and eat Australian caught seafood in our fish and chips almost anywhere in Australia.
Two award categories will run this year – people’s choice and judge’s choice.
Chosen by consumers, this award will be presented to a food outlet that has demonstrated excellence in consistently providing customers with quality seafood. Fish and chips lovers across Australia will be able to nominate and vote for their favourite outlet via the Awards website www.fishandchipsawards.com.au.
This finalist for this category will be selected from the People’s Choice Awards category and will be judged by a panel of mystery shoppers (each jurisdiction will nominate their panel). This award will be presented to a take away food outlet that has demonstrated excellence in consistently providing customers with quality seafood.
The winners from both categories from the state and territories will go through to compete for the National Awards held Thursday 28 September at the International Convention Centre- Sydney.
Fish and chips will be rated against a set of five criteria, whether by public or under-cover judge, to ensure the best is found.
Taste [50%] – the seafood tastes good.
Service [35%] – the service meets customer expectations.
Choice [5%] – Seafood menu offers a range of seafood, including Australian seafood.
Information [5%] – Customers are provided accurate information about the seafood.
Labelling [5%] – the menu complies with the Australian Standard for Fish Names and, highlights the seafood’s provenance (i.e. is labelled accurately).

Jurisdiction awards run 30 June to 12 August 2017.
28 September 2017: The National Awards will be presented at Seafood Directions at the National Seafood Industry Awards Dinner, held in the Grand Ballroom at the International Convention Centre-Sydney.
The Awards are being coordinated by the Fisheries Research and Development Corporation in partnership with the state and territory fishing industry councils. The competition to find the best fish and chips is an initiative of Fisheries Research Development Corporation to promote Australian seafood to Australians.
