FRDC invests in research around Australia and funds around 100 new projects each year.

 

Below is a list and summary of the most recently funded FRDC final projects. This list provides a quick snapshot of what has been recently funded in past three months.

01/10/2009 2009/050 Tactical Research Fund: an innovative approach to co-management in the Cockburn Sound Blue Swimmer Crab (Portunus pelagicus) fishery
This project aims to produce a plan that will allow for the economic and ecological sustainable harvest of crabs from Cockburn Sound whilst maintaining social benefits.
01/10/2009 2009/053 Tactical Research Fund: spreading the risk: management strategies for multi-method inshore fisheries in a changing climate
The aim of this project is to identify the patterns of fishing endorsements that will make NSW fishing businesses more robust to the likely changes in freshwater flow that will result from climate change.
01/10/2009 2009/054 Tactical Research Fund: a socio-economic evaluation of the commercial fishing industry in the Ballina, Clarence and Coffs Harbour regions
This project will provide an overview of the development of commercial fishing in the regions. It will also describe the characteristics of the region including fish and habitats; the commercial operations; the socio-economic benefits from commercial fishing implications of marine protected areas to the regions.
01/10/2009 2009/058 Tactical Research Fund: managing inshore stocks of southern rock lobster for a sustainable fishery
Determine the extent of inshore stock by changing the current stock assessment model to assess stocks at a finer scale. Then assess the cost-effectiveness of fishing methods and develop a management strategy evaluation, presenting options based on the results of the study.
01/10/2009 2009/060 Tactical Research Fund: enhanced Murray cod recreational fisheries outcomes across the Murray-Darling Basin through improved collaboration and alignment of management and research activities
The project aims to develop a shared understanding of the issues, impediments, information gaps and opportunities to build a stronger recreational Murray cod fishery. It will also develop an action plan to improve Murray cod recreational fisheries and build a shared commitment by key stakeholders 
01/10/2009 2009/216 Tactical Research Fund: tracking the impacts on seafood consumption at dining venues arising from the Northern Territory's seafood labelling laws
To quantify the quantity and origin of seafood sold in selected fish retailer establishments in the Darwin region and the impact changes to labelling requirements of fish has had along the supply chain.

To provide an audit of all social sciences research in fisheries over the last fifteen years and facilitate the leveraging of research effort off past effort to improve the benefits of future research.
01/10/2009 2009/318 Tactical Research Fund: national inshore fisheries strategic plan extension and development opportunities
Delivery of the Strategic Plan to the range of State based fisheries that could be drawn under the inshore fisheries umbrella and identify sectoral and regional opportunities for industry fishery improvement within the scope of the Plan.
