Project management is the application of knowledge, skills and techniques to execute a project (the sum of its parts) effectively and efficiently. It is important to note that each project is unique, in that it is not a routine operation, but a specific set of operations designed to accomplish a singular goal - delivery of the project against its objectives.
The key to succesful management of a project focuses on planning, executing, monitoring, communicating and closing the project (including evaluating and extending the results).
A good starting point for all Principal Investigators is to know and understand their obligations as part of the FRDC Project Agreement, especially Milestone dates, Media Contact obligations and Schedule 3 – Special Conditions. We recommend that you obtain a copy of the Project Agreement from your research office.
Contacting the FRDC
When managing a project it is important to keep FRDC up to date with any changes that occur during the projects life. It is much more preferable to alert FRDC to changes or issues early on, and seek advice than after the event. This includes change of Principal Investigator, media requests, or events that change the outcome of the project.
It is preferred that correspondence between the FRDC and PIs be through the email@example.com email, with the project number as the ‘Subject’. This includes milestone submissions or variations, invoicing and enquiries.
Change to the PI
FRDC approval is required for any changes to the PI throughout the duration of the project. A written request is to be sent to FRDC with supporting information as applicable.
Automatic emails from FRDC
As part of the FRDC project management system, automatic emails are generated throughout the life of the project to alert the PI to key dates or as reminders. Automatic emails will be generated to inform the PI and administrative contact on:
- when a due date is approaching;
- when a milestone is overdue;
- when a milestone is approved; and
- when an invoice needs to be raised for an approved milestone.
