A recent field day on Goulburn Island, Northern Territory, highlighted achievements in the development of Tropical Rock Oyster farming by Indigenous communities in northern Australia.

The event was hosted by the Yagbanai Aboriginal Corporation (YAC) and the Warruwi Community and marked the completion of R&D funded by CRC Northern Australia to support development of Blacklip Rock Oyster farming across northern Australia.

The project took a collaborative approach to addressing the technical and regulatory issues facing this fledgling industry and was funded by the Northern Australia Cooperative Research Centre.  It is complemented by FRDC research projects focussed on food safety aspects of shellfish aquaculture in the northern Australian tropics.

FRDC Research Portfolio Manager Wayne Hutchinson and NT-based FRDC Extension Officer Lauren Thornton took part in the field day and had a chance to visit the oyster farm south of Warruwi and to sample the Blacklip Rock Oysters produced by YAC. Their verdict? Delicious!
