Seafood on Spencer

On a sunny Saturday in late March, thousands of people flocked to a sold-out Seafood on Spencer festival. Held on the foreshore at Port Broughton on the Yorke Peninsula of South Australia, the festival was organised by a committee of local fishing families and other community-minded residents with a vision to showcase the fantastic local seafood, restaurants, and community.

A capacity crowd of two thousand visitors were treated to freshly caught seafood prepared by local restaurants such as Kuti Shack and Angler Sterling, who put their own unique twist on seafood such as prawns, crabs, whiting, etc. Visitors were also able to get their groove-on with live bands that got the dance floor pumping all day.

FRDC was proud to support the festival and the local fishing community at Port Broughton. It was an opportunity for our staff to engage with the general public and answer questions about our role in coordinating research and development projects to support the sustainability and prosperity of the fishing and aquaculture sectors. FRDC also interacted with fellow supporting organisations such as the Department of Primary Industries and Regions South Australia (PIRSA) and the Marine Scalefish Fishery.

Fremantle Boat and Seafood Festival

A cross section of marine craft were a major exhibit in the best boat and sailing boat displays showcased at the Fremantle Boat and Seafood Festival in Western Australia (WA), on the10-12 March.

A boating and seafood celebration, the event recognised WA’s unique seafood with an additional focus on fresh organic local produce as well as promoting the State’s premium wines, craft beers and boutique beverages.

The festival featured attractions for the whole family including wine and food tastings, seafood cooking demonstrations on stage, guest chefs, fishing demonstrations and more.

The event provided FRDC Transformation and Extension Manager Jamie Allnutt, and FRDC WA Extension Officer Felicity Horn, with an opportunity to connect with local processors, researchers and industry representatives to discuss current and emerging research issues and initiatives. It also allowed them to explain FRDC’s role in supporting the future of the Fishing and Aquaculture sectors.
